Buffalo, NY – Authorities have identified the man who died after reportedly jumping from the Buffalo Skyway on Thursday morning, November 6, 2025, as Aldo Canestrari, a 67-year-old resident of Buffalo. The incident prompted a large emergency response from Buffalo Fire and Police units after multiple witnesses reported seeing a man leap from the elevated Route 5 bridge.
Emergency Dispatch and Response
According to emergency dispatch audio obtained from Buffalo Fire, first responders were called to Route 5 southbound at the Skyway around 8:22 a.m. after witnesses reported a person jumping from the structure.
In the radio communication, dispatchers can be heard coordinating multiple units, including Engine 1, Ladder 2, Rescue 1, F-40, and B-43, to respond to the scene:
“The following companies respond, Route 5 southbound at the Skyway, for a report of a person that jumped. Go for Engine 1, Ladder 2, Rescue 1, F-40, and B-43. Time 8:22 — Buffalo Fire.”
Moments later, additional information came in reporting a black SUV parked on the side of the Skyway, believed to belong to the individual involved. Witnesses told 911 dispatchers they saw a man jump from the side of the bridge into the water below.
Fire crews quickly confirmed the situation upon arrival. “Chief, I’m on the Skyway on location with PD. We can confirm that,” one responding officer reported, confirming the incident to dispatch.
Due to the bridge’s height and the difficulty of the terrain, rescue teams coordinated access from multiple points, including Furman Boulevard and the General Mills plant area, to search the waterfront for signs of the victim. The radio traffic shows divers and rescue teams navigating logistical challenges, including the Michigan Street Lift Bridge being raised, which temporarily slowed marine access to the scene.
By 8:45 a.m., units had shifted to the General Mills side, with crews confirming the location of the body near the water’s surface. The medical examiner was later called to the scene.
Investigation and Identification
Later in the day, authorities confirmed the deceased as Aldo Canestrari. Police described the death as an apparent suicide and said no foul play is suspected at this time. His vehicle, a dark SUV, was found parked along the Skyway’s shoulder.
The Erie County Medical Examiner’s Office has taken over the investigation and will perform an autopsy to confirm the cause and manner of death.
Community Reaction and Mental Health Support
The Buffalo Skyway, one of the city’s most visible landmarks, has tragically been the site of several similar incidents in past years. Thursday’s event has again raised concerns about mental health support and safety infrastructure along the bridge.
Local residents expressed sadness upon learning of Canestrari’s death, describing him as a quiet, hardworking man who had lived in the Buffalo area for many years.
Officials used the incident to remind the public that help is available for anyone experiencing emotional distress or suicidal thoughts.
“This is a heartbreaking loss for our city,” a Buffalo Police spokesperson said. “If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out. You’re not alone.”
